JorumOpen FAQs

Q1. What exactly is JorumOpen?
A. JorumOpen will be the choice for those who wish to deposit/reuse content whose creators/owners are willing and able to share materials for anyone to use via the web under Creative Commons (CC) licences. With a Creative Commons licence, you keep your copyright but allow others to copy and distribute your work provided they attribute your work with conditions you specify. Use the Creative Commons licence chooser to select the right licence option for your resources.

A. Yes, JorumOpen is a free online service providing access to teaching and learning resources available for everyone.

Q3. Do I need to register for JorumOpen?

JorumOpen does not require any registration or User account setup. Currently deposit is only available to staff at UK Further and Higher Education Institutions, visit the Get Started page to find out more.

A. Creative Commons is a nonprofit organization working to increase the amount of creativity (cultural, educational, and scientific content) in "the commons" — the body of work that is available to the public for free and legal sharing, use, repurposing, and remixing. Q7. Who can deposit into JorumOpen?
A. Depositing in JorumOpen is aimed at teaching and support staff (not students) in UK FE and HE institutions. For further help with registering as a depositor in JorumOpen and gaining access, visit the Get Started section.

Q8. What sort of resources can I deposit?
A. Depositors can upload a variety of resources ranging from simple one-file assets and links to external resources, to more complex learning objects including content packages and open courseware. For a more comprehensive overview of acceptable resource types view the Jorum Collections Policy.

Q9. Is there a restriction on file sizes and file types?
A. Refer to the Collections Policy document for information on accepted file types. If you resource type is not listed, the Jorum team still may be available to ingest it into the respository upon request. Jorum is flexible in the size of files that can be contributed. However for larger files (greater than 20 MB) the Jorum team will work in consultation with the depositor of that material, for example someone who wished to deposit large video files. Email support@jorum.ac.uk so that we can get in touch and discuss your needs.

It is possible to edit, remove or update resources deposited using the repository interface in JorumUK. View the JorumOpen help guides for more information. If you or your institution has any queries about depositing to JorumOpen are not covered in supporting documentation, please contact: support@jorum.ac.uk or visit the Dspace training materials webpage.

Q11. How do I request a resource to be removed from JorumUK?
A. If you find unlawful content in JorumOpen (for example content that you believe breaches the copyright of a third party or breaches any other law) please use the Jorum Procedures to deal with Queries, Alerts and Complaints template. On reciept of a complaint, the Notice and takedown procedure is invoked and details of this can be found under "Section 3: Complaints". To help us to deal with the complaint quickly and efficiently, you are asked to provide as much detail as possible about the resource and the nature of your complaint.

Q1. What is JorumUK?
A. JorumUK will be the choice for those creators/owners that need to restrict the availability of a resource to UK Further and Higher Education Institutions. Initially resources deposited within JorumUK will only be available to UK members of Jorum, who have an institutional subscription and user account.

Q4. How do I register to deposit resources to JorumUK?
A. Firstly, your institution needs to sign the the Jorum Deposit Licence Agreement. Schedule 1 of the Deposit Licence asks for the names of nominated individuals who have the authority to deposit material in Jorum on behalf of the institution. This will be the list of individuals that will be given Contributor accounts for Jorum. We would appreciate having full details of these Contributors, i.e. their addresses, email addresses and telephone/fax numbers. If you are the project or departmental team manager, you should complete this Schedule accordingly before you pass this to the person who can sign on behalf of the institution.
